Lesson 1: The Servant Leader’s Mindset: Listening to Empower

Course Complete

Shift your focus from speaking to understanding. Discover how active listening is your most powerful tool for serving your team, building psychological safety, and unlocking their full potential.

A Note Before We Begin: Leadership is an Action, Not Just a Position

Welcome to your first lesson. Before we begin, let's clarify something important: this course operates on the principle that true leadership is demonstrated through action, not just granted by title.

Whether you currently manage a team, lead projects, or are an individual contributor looking to increase your impact, these skills will serve you. The exercises can be applied in any professional context. If you don't have direct reports, practice with colleagues, stakeholders, or through role-playing scenarios. The goal is to build these leadership muscles now, preparing you for whatever opportunities come next.

The Power of Listening as Leadership

Think of the most influential person in your career—perhaps a manager, mentor, or senior colleague. What made them stand out? Chances are, they made you feel truly heard. They didn't just wait for their turn to talk; they engaged deeply with your perspective.

This lesson focuses on developing that same capability in yourself. The ability to listen with intent is what separates someone people simply report to from someone they genuinely want to follow. It's a skill that creates impact regardless of your formal role.

Your Leadership Challenge: The 5-Minute Silent Conversation

This week, you'll practice one of the most powerful yet underutilised leadership skills: intentional listening.

Choose Your Context:

  • If you manage people: Use your next one-on-one meeting.
  • If you don't manage people: Use a conversation with a colleague, stakeholder, or when discussing work challenges with peers

Your Instructions:

  1. Begin by saying: "For the next five minutes, I'm focused on understanding your perspective. Please share what's top of mind about [the project/your work/this challenge]."

  2. For five minutes, your only jobs are to:  Listen attentively. Use nonverbal cues (nodding, eye contact).  Resist interrupting, problem-solving, or defending
  3.  When time is up, summarize 2-3 key points you heard
  4. Confirm your understanding: "Did I capture that correctly?"

 Your Reflection:

After the conversation, take two minutes to write a brief reflection answering this question:

"What was one surprising or valuable insight I gained by prioritising listening over speaking?"

Repeat this practice until intentional listening becomes an automatic leadership habit.

 Practice in The Prompt Hub:

Ready to develop this skill in a risk-free environment? Use this prompt in your preferred AI tool:

"Simulate a conversation with a team member who seems disengaged. I will practice active listening. You provide the team member's statements, and I will respond with paraphrasing and open-ended questions. After three exchanges, give me feedback on my listening skills."
